Program Overview

Program description and objectives:

The Clean Technology Fund (CTF) provides scaled-up concessional financing to support the demonstration, deployment and transfer of low-carbon technologies with significant potential for long-term greenhouse gas emissions reductions. CTF supports transformational public and private sector investments, including renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy storage, clean transport and low-carbon technologies in industrial, commercial and residential sectors. Financing is delivered through CIF’s multilateral development bank partners and is designed to address investment barriers, improve project viability and mobilize additional private and public capital. CTF combines concessional finance with MDB and other financing to accelerate the deployment of technologies and business models that can be replicated and scaled. CTF offers funding through the following CIF programs: The Accelerating Coal Transition investment program (ACT) supports coal-dependent developing economies on a just pathway away from coal. It offers public and private sector entities a toolkit built on three pillars (governance, people and communities, and infrastructure) to retire or repurpose coal assets, build new clean energy capacity, and support affected workers and communities. The Clean Technology program provides concessional financing for the demonstration, deployment and transfer of low-carbon technologies, such as renewable energy, energy efficiency and clean transport, with strong potential for long-term emissions reductions. The Industry Decarbonization program helps developing countries shift high-emitting, hard-to-abate industries to low-carbon practices, build clean technology supply chains, and unlock investment in net zero, climate-resilient business models and technologies. It builds public-private coalitions to break down investment barriers and prove new technologies, and at least 50 percent of its financing must support private sector-led projects or projects with significant private co-investment.
