Climate Investment Funds (CIF)
Multilateral Fund
- Organization description
- Climate Investment Funds (CIF) is a $14 billion multilateral climate fund established in 2008 to support transformational low-carbon and climate-resilient development in developing countries. CIF provides large-scale, low-cost and long-term finance designed to overcome investment barriers, reduce risk and mobilize additional public and private capital. CIF consists of two key funds: the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) and the Strategic Climate Fund (SCF). Through these funds and their underlying programs, CIF supports clean energy and energy transitions, climate resilience and adaptation, sustainable forests and nature-based solutions, and the decarbonization of carbon-intensive sectors. CIF investments are implemented through the World Bank, International Finance Corporation (IFC), African Development Bank (AfDB), Asian Development Bank (ADB), European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). CIF uses a combination of financial instruments, including grants, contingent grants, concessional loans, equity and guarantees, to make investments more viable and attractive to public and private sector investors. Its approach supports first-of-their-kind investments, tests innovative business models, builds track records in emerging markets and helps create the conditions for investments to scale and accelerate private sector participation.
