Global Affairs Canada (GAC)
Bilateral donors and government agencies
- Organization description
- Global Affairs Canada is the department responsible for Canada's international engagement, and works to define, shape and advance Canada's interests and values in a complex global environment. Global Affairs Canada will continue to deliver results on the Government of Canada's commitments to preserve and support Canadian prosperity and security, and to contribute to a more just, inclusive, and sustainable world, in a gender-responsive manner. Canada recognizes that promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls to reach their full potential is the most effective approach to achieving this goal. Canada uses innovative financing, defined as financial structures and mechanisms that mobilize, govern or distribute funds beyond traditional donor-country ODA. Canada’s international assistance programming combines innovative financing and climate action to support sustainable development in developing countries. Through the International Assistance Innovation Program (IAIP), Canada has historically partnered with private sector and development finance actors to mobilize investment for projects that promote economic growth, poverty reduction, gender equality, and climate outcomes, while using repayable and blended finance approaches to maximize development impact. At the same time, Canada’s International Climate Finance Program has provided significant support for climate mitigation and adaptation efforts, nature based solutions, climate governance, and biodiversity, building on successive commitments since 2010 with a new climate finance 4.0 pledge for the next five years (2026-2031).
