Program Overview

Program description and objectives:

Canada's International Climate Finance program supports developing countries in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, adapting to the impacts of climate change, and advancing sustainable and inclusive development. Since 2010, Canada has delivered three international climate finance commitments, supporting initiatives that accelerate clean energy transitions, strengthen climate resilience, advance nature-positive outcomes, and help developing countries pursue low-carbon, climate-resilient development. Canada's most recent $5.3 billion climate finance commitment (2021-2026) was fully disbursed as of March 2026, supporting a diverse portfolio of investments through multilateral institutions and other partners, with many projects remaining operational. Building on its previous commitments, Canada has reaffirmed its support for international climate action, with a goal to deliver more than $13 billion in climate-related support to developing countries between 2026 and 2031. Global Affairs Canada is expected to deliver approximately $3 billion in climate finance programming over the same period. Through a mix of grants and loans, the program aims to support low-carbon and climate-resilient development, strengthen climate mitigation and adaptation efforts, and help developing countries address the economic and social impacts of climate change while advancing sustainable development objectives.
